Serving on committees through Kiwanis is one of the best ways to meet other members and feel connected to the club. One of the most frequently asked questions is, “How can I get involved?” You can sign up for a committee at any time throughout the year. Please read below for committee descriptions and times of the year when they are active. There are so many ways to make a difference within the club and the community through participating in KCOB committees.

Athletic Awards

Follow area high school athletes for each of the major sports. Select Male and Female Athlete of the Year and Scholar Athlete with the Bill Legg Achievement Award. Plan luncheon in May. (Active during school year)

Birmingham Business Hall of Fame

Review nominations of executives and entrepreneurs who have had substantial, positive impact in the greater Birmingham area. Plan and host annual dinner. Assist with publicity for the event. (Active Jan-Aug)

Circle K Chapters

Work with college chapters at UAB and Birmingham Southern as mentors and advisors for chapter activities. Assist in planning and coordinating community service projects. (Active during school year)

Key Clubs @ High Schools

Connect with sponsored clubs encouraging and promoting activities and projects. Periodically attend their meetings. Assist in planning community service projects. Host Key Club members who attend our weekly meetings. (Active during the school year)

Meeting Greeter

Promote a friendly atmosphere for members and guests. Greet members and pull their badge. Make sure they scan in for meeting credit. Guide them to sign member sympathy or get-well cards. (Flexible scheduling)

Member Engagement and Special Events

Host quarterly networking/off-site events; promote full attendance at KCOB luncheons and events. Contact members who are not attending and encourage them to attend. Survey membership for suggestions on how to make membership valuable. (Year round)

Military Affairs

Plan a meaningful meeting around Memorial Day and Veterans Day with a military focus. (Committee meets as needed throughout the year)

Reading Is Fundamental

Read to Head Start preschool students three times a year. Sessions are at Arrington/JCCEO Center, Shades Cahaba School and the YWCA downtown. Reading dates are in November, February and April each year. Reading sessions with students last approximately one hour.

Youth of the Year

Review nominations of high school seniors excelling in scholarship, leadership, citizenship and service. Participate with interviews, plan luncheon, identify speaker and host honorees at the April event. (Active Jan-April)
