Reading Is Fundamental
Children of all ages are at the heart of service projects for the Club. Members regularly read to Head Start students. Annually since 1992, members have staffed the Reading is Fundamental Program in local elementary schools donating an estimated 1,200 man-hours and $104,625 worth of books.
Key Clubs & Circle K Clubs
Kiwanis Club of Birmingham sponsors Key Clubs at many area high schools with plans to charter new ones in the future. We also support Circle K at area universities. Supporting leadership opportunities for youth is a priority of the Club.
Key Leaders Weekend
The Club sponsors students annually at a Key Leaders Weekend Retreat where they interact with students from across the state while honing their leadership skills.
Youth of the Year Scholarship
Members of the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham have granted scholarships worth about $220,000 to the Youth of the Year since 1971. The Youth of the Year Committee seeks applications from high school guidance counselors of the most promising students in the area. Typically five to six students are recognized at a meeting in the spring with one of them being named as the “Youth of the Year.” Students who are interested in applying should work with their guidance counselor.
